Oh What Fun We Always Have, Here on the Jacobs Homestead. Catching two of my female geese so they can go live with Rupert, a male goose desprately needing companionship. Good Luck Girls!!!

The fun continues as we prepare for lambing season. Heat lamps hung, straw in the stalls and ewes are vaccinated and getting fat.

Christmas Tree

My darling husband made this tree stand for me 10 years ago.

It was looking a little rustic so 2011 Christmas gave it a makeover.

This is our second 10 feet plus tree. The first tree to go in the stand was 11 feet plus.

This year's tree slightly shorter, but not much. We limbed it up about four feet to make it baby proof and then it was full and beautiful up to the vaulted ceiling.

Kitties in hay piles, fuzzy ponies, baby goats, and little cowboys playing on gates.

Could we ask for a better life for our children. Clean air, knowledge and good ol WORK is great for anyone.

Being creative with barn wood

Well, Barn Wood might be stretching it a bit. A piece of an old pallet is more accurate. Cut into squares and hand painted by yours truely.

I think it came out quite good. Got the idea from a wall hanging they had at our local home furnishings store-Thank you.

Anyone have ideas- I can make Christmas gifts!!

Field Burning

Harvest time is almost done here in Central Oregon-that means field burning. Here goes the wheat stuble in the pivot field behind our house.

Newly Planted Pasture

Update on the newly planted pasture. Having shared with you the tilling, planting and rolling of our back pasture by my mini farmers and equipment, I felt obligated to share in the growth of that project.

It is doing well.

New Member of the Sheep Family

Introducting our new Ram--"Romeo" The ewes won't have his babies this year, but next year we hope to have some cute little freckle faced club lambs running around. He is Dorset so hopefully by crossing him with our Hamp/Suffolk ewes we can have meater lambs that still taste as wonderful as those we have raised in the past.

Animals and Products

Just some updates on the animals and products here at The Jacobs Homestead.

Our lovely hens are producing quite well this month as the weather cools and the grass grows lush before the frost. Here they are enjoying some left over goats milk from the morning milking. Extra protien and calcium as well as a host of other vitamins and minerals.

Lilly the milk goat is also still producing quite well.

Let Fall Begin

As the summer heat presists here at the Jacobs' Homestead the acivities of fall begin full steam. As we charge ahead toward Fall the sheep are visiting their boyfriend, the Nanny goats await the arrival of theirs and the chickens continue to give us a dozen or so eggs each day. Clarabelle the soon to be milk cow is enjoying some peace and quiet on the newly planted pasture as she plays in youthful abandon. As for my mimi famrers they have skipped off to 1st grade and Pre School this Fall and are enjoying their new accedemic adventures. Tap dance has resumed as well so we here click click tap tap all over the house. Me, I am wondering what I will be doing with my newly aquired free time. With only the son and animals for company I might have to start my winter building projects early. Though the husband and I are still working on the new chicken house / loafing shed. Pictures coming soon.

Next Generation Farmer

I have been planting and rolling and watering the back pasture the last two days. Fun! I took a picture of all my heavy equipment. We truly are a mini farm now. Mini plow, mini seeder pulled by the mini tractor and the four wheeler pulling the mini roller. On top of that we have mini farmers!!!!

Farm Fresh Eggs

The Jacobs Homestead currently has 17 laying hens, one good ol hen named Blanch who is suppose to lay blue eggs-but doesn't. And one little tiny Old English Rooster named Big Jake.

We currently get anywhere from 9 to 12 eggs every day. Three hens are white egg layers and the rest are all shades of brown.

Eggs are $2.50 a dozen or $4.00 for an 18 pack.

We Start Again

I created this blog for my Garden and all natural product interests, However, it has now been recreated into the Jacobs Homestead homepage. We will give you updates on our growing family of beautiful children, existing animals and their new babies and all things growing, living and created here on the farm. We are going to try and keep you updated on farm fresh products that we have for you and also on the crafts and projects that we create by repurposing or recycling.

Pole Green Beans

How to grow great pole beans? Well, first you have to have a few bamboo poles. They work the best because the bean sprouts can grip to the wood. Then you have to have lots of water and sunlight. I also fertilize mine with my regular lawn fertilizer. To keep your beans producing you have to pick them as soon as they are of decent size. Approximately 3 inches in length is a good rule of thumb. The best part about growing pole beans is that my 1 year old daughter has learned how to pick her own and well they are just great for her to eat and learn to take bites.

Summer Squash

Summer Squash, you either love it or hate it. Though there are many different varieties the most common are zucchini and yellow squash. My particular favorite is Yellow Crookneck. It has a great sweet flavor. It is best when picked young while the skin is still soft.
Growing squash requires lots of sun and damp soil. I fertilize mine with my lawn fertilizer. It seems to work really well. Picking the squash also keeps your plants producing more and more.
